Fine woodwork is an investment, and like any investment it rewards a little care. The Gulf climate asks more of timber than a temperate one does: intense outdoor heat, powerful air conditioning indoors, and the humidity swings between them all act on wood over time. The good news is that quality joinery is built for these conditions — and a few simple habits keep it looking its best for decades.

Understand what the climate does

Wood is hygroscopic: it absorbs and releases moisture with the air around it, expanding slightly when humid and contracting when dry. In a Gulf home, air conditioning keeps interiors very dry, while opening a door to the outside introduces warm, humid air. Large or rapid swings are what stress timber — so the goal is stability, not perfection.

Manage humidity and temperature

Protect from sunlight

Direct sun is one of the most overlooked threats. Over time it fades finishes unevenly and can dry surfaces. Use blinds or sheer curtains on sun-facing windows, and rotate any free-standing pieces occasionally so they age evenly.

Clean the right way

Feed and refresh

Oiled finishes benefit from occasional re-oiling to restore depth and protection; lacquered surfaces generally just need clean, gentle care. If you are unsure what finish you have, ask the maker before applying any product.

Quality timber, well looked after, only gets better with age. Most damage comes not from use, but from neglecting the simple things.
